Moniaive Community Composting Scheme

We are trialling a Community Composting project, working with the DG Community Food Network. On a wet and windy day in February, a bunch of hardy volunteers came together in the Moniaive Community Garden to construct their new rotary Composter. After months of planning and preparation, we were finally ready to put together the Jora 400 Composter gifted to us through the Propagate and DG Community Food Network pilot community composting project (funded by Third Sector Dumfries and Galloway). Under the watchful eye of Senga (DG Climate Hub), we were the first of the three communities taking part in the Trial to construct our new composter.

Katie, our Health & Wellbeing Officer, had already been researching community composting for some months. Back in September 2025 she took part in a fact-finding visit to established schemes in Glasgow. You can read her report on that visit here:

We currently have about 15 local households taking part in the trial. They collect, record and then process their household food scraps in our Jora Composter, using the following system:
