GMAP 2016-2021

We issued our first five-year Glencairn & Moniaive Action Plan (GMAP) in 2016.  This prioritised actions across core areas and resulted in the following projects:

Affordable Housing – In 2020 we completed our first community owned affordable house, the renovation of a long-empty property in Sawmill Green, Moniaive, to provide a fully-accessible home suitable for an older or less-mobile person. This project won the “Best Long-Term Empty Homes Restoration Project” award at the Scottish Empty Homes Partnership Annual Awards in 2021.

High Street Regeneration – From 2016-19 we worked with Dumfries & Galloway Council, Moniaive Primary school and other partners to improve accessibility to our High Street.  We were one of four communities to participate in a national pilot scheme with the walking charity, Living Streets, which enabled us to carry out Community Street Audits with residents.  This work supported our call, eventually successful, for a 20mph zone in Moniaive.  It also enabled us to negotiate with the Timber Transport Forum to impose time restrictions on timber waggon transit close to the primary school during school-in and school-out times.

Community Spaces – We considered both internal and external community spaces. We fundraised for and carried out a £32k play equipment upgrade project at Macara Park.  We supported Glencairn Memorial Institute as they commenced refurbishment and redecoration.  We then turned our attentions back to the High Street, where in 2019 we purchase and renovated a long-empty office building to create a new community shop and hub, The Hive.
